The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said that it will conduct the Ekiti State governorship election in June 2014. The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu, on Sunday, revealed this to Punch in an interview in Abuja.
He said the timetable for the polls would be agreed on within the timeframe speculated by the electoral act.
“The schedule for the elections will be announced when the commission formally decides on the timelines; certainly, within the time frame prescribed by the law relative to the expiration of respective tenure,” Idowu said.
“The elections won’t be held at the same time (referring to Osun State as the other), since the tenures are not expiring at the same time. The general projection is that Ekiti will be held by mid-year 2014 (June), and Osun shortly thereafter,” he added.
The present governor of the state, Kayode Fayemi, got into power after the election tribunal declared him winner of the April 14, 2007 gubernatorial election, which earlier produced Segun Oni as winner.
Oni was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the polls, while Fayemi contested under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN. Oni was removed from office on February 19, 2009, by a Court of Appeal in Ilorin.
