The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association, PENGASSAN, have cancelled their proposed joint strike actions. This decision was reached on Tuesday night in Abuja after a meeting with the Federal Government.
The oil and gas unions entered into a six-hour meeting with representatives of the FG, represented by the Ministers of Labour and Petroleum Resources; Emeka Wogu and Diezani Alison-Madueke respectively.
At the end of the talks, a communiqué was released, which was signed by both Ministers on behalf of the government, and the presidents of NUPENG and PENGASSAN, Igwe Achese and Babatunde Ogun, who signed on behalf of their respective bodies.
“Trade unions in the oil and gas sector of the economy, namely NUPENG and PENGASSAN have agreed with the Federal Government to engage in social dialogue.
“We have all resolved to develop viable and workable business models for the nation’s refineries.
“Based on the above understanding, the trade unions in the oil and gas sector shall not embark on any form of industrial actions over the subject matter,” the communiqué said.
The two unions had warned that they would go on strike in protest of government’s plan to sell the nation’s refineries.
