The governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, has apologised to journalists in the state for the attack on them on Thursday by some suspected party thugs.
Amosun, speaking on Friday at a press conference in Abeokuta, the state capital, described the incident as unfortunate and assured that his administration will work to avoid such from happening again. He however absolved his government from the attack.
On Thursday, some suspected thugs believed to be members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State brutalised some journalists and residents at the party’s secretariat. About three newsmen were beaten by the hoodlums and their belongings allegedly taken. The journalists had gone there to cover the inauguration of the harmonisation committee of APC in the state.
Shortly after the attack, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, in the state, threatened to blacklist APC in Ogun State.
“What happened yesterday (Thursday) is avoidable, and unnecessary. I believe, truly, that it was due to communication gap,” Amosun said at the press briefing. He explained that the inauguration at the secretariat had been postponed, but that the information was not communicated to all the members.
