The Canadian government has vehemently denied cancelling a planned visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the country. This was made known by the Canadian Counsellor in Abuja, Ms Alexandra Mackenzie, in an interview with Punch.
Mackenzie revealed that there was never a scheduled visit of Jonathan to the country in the first place. She however said that her country will be glad to welcome the President to Canada whenever he so wishes.
“Canada and Nigeria enjoy shared interest in expanding opportunities for economic, social and security cooperation between our two countries.
“No visit is scheduled. However, we look forward to the opportunities of welcoming President Goodluck Jonathan to Canada at a future date,” said Mackenzie.
There were media reports that the Canadian government cancelled Jonathan’s visit to the country because he secretly signed the anti-gay law on January 7, 2014, which became known to the public on January 14.
The Canadian government, as well as other Western countries, has since kicked against the law.
