Some gunmen numbering about six, according to an eyewitness, shot dead a community leader in Bayelsa State at the early hours of Monday. The victim, Morris Jonathan, 34, was a former Chairman of Peremabiri Community Development Committee, CDC, where he hails from. He was assassinated at his residence in Akenpaiarea in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Reports say that the gunmen stormed Jonathan’s house at about 1am on Monday and shot sporadically before entering his bedroom, killing him at a close range.
It was gathered that the assassins did not go away with any of the deceased’s belongings but left immediately they confirmed that their victim was dead, leaving the wife of the late Jonathan to mourn her dead husband.
The remains of Jonathan has been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, we learnt.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, Hilary Opara, has disclosed that his men have launched an investigation into the murder. He further revealed that no arrest has yet been made by the Command.
