Some angry mobs, mostly youths, took laws into their hands on Wednesday in Bauchi State when they protested outside a Sharia Court in the state.
The demonstrators, numbering over one thousand, threw stones into the court’s building demanding the speedy conviction of seven men arrested last week for belonging to gay organizations. The seven gay men were brought to court for trial on Wednesday when the protest occurred.
Security officials shot into the air severally to disperse the irritated youths. However, the judge promptly stopped the trial and ordered that the suspects be returned to the prison safely.
Recall that last week, a Sharia Court convicted a man for being gay. He was sentenced to 20 strokes of cane.
There have been mixed reactions on the anti gay law passed on January 7, 2014 by President Goodluck Jonathan.
