LASU Crisis: Hoodlums Hijacked The Protest–SUG Boss

President of the Student Union Government of the Lagos State University, Ojo, Mojirade Hassan, revealed on Friday that the violent protest that marred the school’s examination on Thursday was hijacked by some thugs.

Mojirade made this revelation at the public hearing held at the Lagos State House of Assembly to look into the crisis with the aim of resolving it.

The hearing, which was attended by members of the House, was presided over by the Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji. The public hearing started at about 11am.

Narrating how the incident started, the SUG leader explained that the protest began peacefully until the school management stood its ground on not re-opening the school registration portal so as to allow for late registration of courses by some students.

Mojirade recounted that, “the students were initially peaceful with the protest while we were trying to pacify the management on their behalf. Unknown to us (Union leaders), some students were planning to turn the demonstration violent.

“Some hoodlums then hijacked the situation and turned it into a bloody one. We noticed some Danfo (commercial) buses entering the school compound during the protest on Thursday and we wondered how they beat the school’s security at the gate, which allowed them in.

“I was beaten to a pulp by the students as well as my excos. Two of them are presently receiving treatments at the hospital. I came here today in order to honour this invitation. I should still be in the hospital receiving medications.”

As at the time of filing this report (4:10pm), the House is yet to resolve the issue. The Speaker called for a 15-minute recess to meet with the school management on what decision to take on re-opening the registration portal.

At the protest on Thursday, the Vice-Chancellor’s car was badly damage by the students. The students also destroyed some school properties.

More details later.
