The Lagos State government, on Thursday, expressed dismay over the continuous failure of traders at the popular Ladipo Auto Spare Parts Market in Mushin area of the state to keep to environmental laws in the market. This followed an on-the-spot assessment carried out by the state Commissioner of Environment, Tunji Bello, at the market on Thursday.
The Commissioner frowned at the display of wares by some traders of the market on the expressway. Bello, accompanied by some state officials, personally reprimanded some of the traders and technicians selling by the roadside.
He disclosed that the state governor, Babatunde Fashola, directed him to lead a surveillance team to the market. Bello further expressed disgust at the failure of the traders to keep to the agreement they signed with the state government in 2013, when the market was closed for the same offence.
He noted that the governor will decide on the next line of action to take on the matter.
Bello observed that serious trading activities were still going on in the streets as well as shanties still in the marketplace. The Commissioner stressed that proper sanitation must be carried out by the traders before the market will be re-opened if the government eventually closes it again.
