24-Year-Old Custom Boss Impersonator Bags 3 Months Jail Term

Twenty four years old undergraduate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Bello Godwin Onimisi, has been convicted and sentenced to three months imprisonment. Onimisi, a student of Industrial Engineering of the university, was jailed for impersonating the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Dikko Inde Abdullahi.

Onimisi, a native of Igarra, Akoko Edo local government area of Edo State, was jailed on a two count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence. He was also accused of using Dikko’s telephone line to demand payment from unsuspecting members of the public

The convict was sentenced by Justice Adebunkola Banjoko of the FCT High Court in Gudu, Abuja on Wednesday. Apart from the jail term, the convict was ordered to pay a fine of N50, 000.

Onimisi was first arraigned on October 23, 2012, on a four count charge, shortly after he was arrested in Awka, Anambra State, on the heels of a petition from the office of the Comptroller General of Custom, Alhaji Dikko, who alleged that a syndicate of fraudsters had been using his telephone number and demanding payment of money into several bank accounts.

The convict initially pleaded not guilty to the offence but later changed his plea.
