No fewer than 52 persons were believed to have lost their lives on Sunday evening in a fresh attack in Borno State. The latest attack was reportedly executed by members of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist group.
Also, about 300 houses were reported to have been burnt by the terrorists. The incident, as gathered, occurred in Kawuri village, which is about 70 km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The state Commissioner of Police, Lawan Tanko, confirmed the attack to newsmen on Monday but failed to give details on the casualty.
The police boss said, “yes, there was an attack in Kawuri village in Konduga local government yesterday (Sunday) and I am awaiting detailed report on casualties from the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, there, but from the preliminary report I got, no police officer died, except few that were injured. But as soon as the report comes in we will brief the press at once.”
But it was learnt that one soldier was killed in by the gunmen during the deadly invasion.
The invaders, numbering over 50, were reported to have practically brought down the whole village completely. They were said to have used various kinds of explosives to carry out the attack on the villagers.
Borno is one of the three states under emergency rule since May 2013. Few days ago, the new Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, promised to end activities of insurgents in the North by the end of April 2014.
