Convicted leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, Henry Okah, was caught while attempting to escape from his South African prison. The ex-militant leader is currently serving 24 years jail term at the Leeukop prison in northern Johannesburg.
He was convicted for 13-count terrorism charges in 2013.
A spokesperson of South Africa’s department of correctional service, Manelisi Wolela, confirmed on Monday that Okah was “one of the five inmates that attempted to escape and whose efforts were foiled.”
Okah was arrested and tried in South Africa, where he has permanent residency. He was convicted for masterminding the October 1, 2010 twin bombings that claimed the lives of 12 persons in Abuja.
