Henceforth, any motorist caught with fake driver’s license would be prosecuted and sent to prison, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has declared.
This declaration was made by the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the FRSC, Osita Chidoka, during a pre-annual lecture press cinference held few days ago. Chidoka stated that this move is part of measures to sustain the integrity of the Nigerian driver’s licence.
The Corps Marshal also said that such motorists will have their vehicles impounded while a criminal charge of “possession of fake identity documents’’ would be added to the offence of possessing fake driver’s licence.
According to him, “let me tell motorists that anybody we arrest with a fake driver’s licence, we are sending straight to court”.
Speaking further, he added that, “we are impounding that vehicle because you are not authorized to drive on Nigerian roads and we will not only stop with licence violation but will also ask the Police to include criminal charges of possession of fake identity document.”
However, Chidoka appealed to those intending to obtain the driver’s license not to apply by proxy but go through the normal process which may appear though cumbersome due to network issues which often arise during the online transaction.“It is important that you go through the normal process and get it (driver’s licence); the normal process is cumbersome for some people, it takes time,” he said.
He attributed the cumbersome experience “to our desire to ensure the integrity of the process and I crave the indulgence of Nigerians to appreciate that is an enormous responsibility, we are trying to make it as easy as possible but we also do not want to compromise on the integrity of the product (document).”
