Three pregnant women were on Saturday killed in Benin City, Edo State in a stampede that occurred during the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, recruitment exercise which held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Over 20,000 applicants stormed the stadium to write an aptitude test put together by the immigration authorities.
Trouble reportedly started at the stadium when security personnel stationed at the venue of the examination could not manage the crowd and allegedly shot sporadically in the air. This reportedly caused some of the applicants to run for cover, which resulted into a stampede that led to the death of the three women.
Several others sustained injuries while few others fainted but were later revived.
A similar scenario also played itself out at the Port Harcourt centre in Rivers State, where four persons reportedly lost their lives while attempting to write the NIS test.
Earlier on Saturday in Abuja, about 12 persons died in a stampede that occurred at the National Stadium.
