The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has disclosed that the Federal Government has not directed it to refund the N1000 it collected from about 693,000 applicants that entered for the NIS job.
Public Relations Officer of the NIS, Emeka Obua, informed Punch that such a directive can only come from the FG to the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, and then to the NIS. He further stated that up till now, no such order has been given to the Immigration authorities.
Also speaking to Punch, the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, George Ubong, corroborated Obua’s response to the newspaper’s enquiry. Ubong stated that no such directive had been received in the ministry.
“We have not received any directive to refund any money,” Obong said.
On March 15, 2014, about 20 applicants died in three of the centres where the NIS aptitude test took place across Nigeria.
There were reports last week that President Goodluck Jonathan had ordered the refund of the applicants’ money.
