Nigerians may have to endure the long queues at the filling stations due to the fuel scarcity presently biting hard on them as the feelers reaching us show that it may not end anytime soon.
This is because the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has closed the operations of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company, NIPCO, in Lagos.
According to a senior staff of NIPCO, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Friday, on the condition of anonymity, the NIPCO was shut on the orders of NUPEND over a leadership tussle within the Nigeria Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN.
The source told NAN that, “we don’t have any industrial crisis that could have warranted the shutdown of operations. I urge the Federal Government to intervene in the matter before its gets out of hand.”
It was learnt that the situation is making NIPCO to lose about N600 million per day. From what we also gathered, NIPCO serves as the Federal Government’s strategic depot for fuel storage and distribution across the country.
Meanwhile, NAN was unable to speak with NUPENG’s top official on this matter as the were not available for comments.
