Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, has apologised to Nigerians for the botched recruitment exercise into the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, which claimed the lives of about 20 applicants across the country.
While answering questions from journalists on Sunday in Abuja, Moro noted that the exercise was intended to provide jobs for many Nigeria, irrespective of their background and connection, in a transparent way, but that it later turned out the way it went.
He further said that, “whatever outcome we got from the exercise, positive or negative, I take full responsibility for it because I am the Minister.”
Moro also pointed out that, “if we had foreseen these deaths, we would have stopped the exercise,” stating further that, “the deaths of these young Nigerians, who
would have added value to the human resource of the country, is highly regrettable.”
The Minister said the unfortunate incident would be used to organise a hitch-free exercise.
On Saturday, March 15, 2014, the NIS conducted aptitude tests in the 36 state capitals in Nigeria. Stampedes from these centres caused the deaths of nearly 20 persons.
