Nigeria’s Service Chiefs have been summoned by the House of Representatives over the fate of the abducted students of the Government Girls Secondary School, GGSS, Chibok, Borno State, who were kidnapped few weeks ago. The school girls, numbering over 200, were abducted by some suspected Boko Haram members in their school.
After failed efforts by security operatives to rescue the schoolgirls, the lawmakers have asked the Service Chiefs to appear before the House on the matter.
Moving the motion on Tuesday at the plenary under matters of urgent national importance, Hon Peter Biye Gumtha explained that “during the night of April 14 and 16, Boko Haram terrorist invaded Chibok town in Borno State, destroyed houses, looted market stalls and abducted 273 SS3 girls at Government Girls Secondary School Chibok writing their Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE.”
Also contributing to the debate, Hon Sadiq Asimah urged the House to sack all Service Chiefs, as well as the National Security Adviser, NSA, if they fail to produce the missing girls within one week.
However, this was turned down by most members of the House.
Expected to appear before the House Reps are the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Marshal Alex Badeh; Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt Gen Kenneth Minimah; Chief of Naval Staff, CNS, Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin and Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Adesola Amosun.
