The controversial tuition fee paid by students of the Lagos State University, LASU, has been reduced by the state government. The decision to heed to the cries of Nigerians, especially students of the higher institution, who have staged several protests against the hike in the fees, was reached on Wednesday.
Special Adviser to the state governor, Fatai Olukoga, briefing journalists on the recommendations of the ad-hoc committee on the LASU fees, noted that the reduction was based on the fact that some of the fee components should not have been applied across board and certain charges could be reduced on compassionate grounds.
He explained that the government has approved a 34-60% reduction in school fees and, in accordance with the Law setting up the University, forwarded its approval to the University Governing Council for consideration and implementation.
He added that the University Governing Council will issue details of what is now payable by students in each department and deal with all other management matters of the University. He advised all individuals and groups within the community to relate to the University Council accordingly.
Olukoga disclosed further that the state government will remain committed to the development of LASU and ensure the provision of a conducive learning environment with up-to date facilities.
There have been unrest in the school following students’ protests over the school fees which they said was too expensive for a public school.
