A new e-passport has been launched by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. The president, shortly before the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, said the new passport, comprising 64 pages, was designed because of frequent travellers and businessmen.
Jonathan disclosed that the passport has a better conformity with international best practices, while urging officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, to improve on their service deliveries at the various points of entry into Nigeria because visitors to the country first come in contact with them, and that they (NIS officials) represent the image of the country.
Furthermore, the president said adequate security measures were put in place in producing the new e-passport so as to make it difficult for criminals to produce its fake.
He said, “If our passport could be easily faked by criminals, then we will have problems.”
The Nigerian leader charged NIS to ensure that Nigerians living outside the country are able to easily get it. “One thing again is how Nigerians are able to get passports easily especially those living outside this country,” the president said.
