President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of Suleiman Abba as the new Inspector General of Police, IGP. Jonathan, on Thursday, through his media aide, Reuben Abati, made the announcement.
Abati revealed on his twitter handle on Thursday that Abba now “replaces IGP Abubakar who proceeds on statutory retirement.” He further disclosed that “Abba’s appointment is with effect from August 1, 2014.”
The former police chief reached his 35 years in public service on Thursday, July 31, 2014, which necessitated his replacement. MD Abubakar was named police IG in 2012 and worked towards the disbandment of police check-points on major roads in the country.
Abba was an Assistant Inspector General, AIG, in charge of Zone 7 Command before his new appointment. He was also a former Aide-De-Camp, ADC, to Maryam Abacha, wife of former military ruler, Sani Abacha, who died in 1998.
The new IG hails from Jigawa State and has held various positions in the Force. He was once the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State. Also, he was the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT Command. Abba is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.
