Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has stressed that the Eko Atlantic City project will not cause flooding in Lagos Island as some people have feared recently. The number one citizen of the ‘aquatic state’ made this known at a forum held recently in the state.
Fashola noted that those nursing such fears do not know history of the state, revealing that some parts of the new city used to be a dry land before the sea took over the area. He maintained that the state was taking over the its land from the sea.
‘Those who said we (Lagos) are chasing the sea out of its area do not know the history of Lagos. We are reclaiming our land from the sea. Right from Modupe Street, the road in front of the beach, we used to walk about two to three kilometres before we could see water,’ the governor told the gathering.
While some have hailed the project, others have expressed optimism, saying the state is faced with more daunting issues than creating a city from the sea. When completed, the Eko Atlantic City would add to the beauty of Lagos. The area is expected to be occupied by the rich.
