WHO Declares Nigeria Ebola Free

The World Health Organisation, WHO, has pronounced Nigeria an Ebola free country. This pronouncement was made in Abuja at a press conference on Tuesday by the body’s representative, Rui Gama Vaz.

Vaz commended Nigeria for winning the battle against the deadly disease, which has claimed thousands of lives. WHO said over 4000 people have been killed by Ebola, while almost 10000 persons have been infected with the haemorrhagic fever.

Nigeria was finally declared an Ebola free country after observing that no new cases of the disease were recorded for about 42 days.

“Nigeria is now free of Ebola,” Vaz said at the press conference, adding that, “The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated. This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world that Ebola can be contained.”

On Friday, Senegal was declared an Ebola free country by WHO after it also passed the 42 day observation period without new cases.
