The biggest town under the control of militant Islamist group called Boko Haram, Mubi in Adamawa State, has been recaptured and now in control of the Nigerian government, Aproko247 has learnt.
In October 2014, the Islamic group captured Mubi, the second largest town in Adamawa, and declared it a caliphate, chasing Nigerian security forces out of the town, including the army. The terrorists renamed the town as Madinatul Islam, meaning City of Islam.
It was learnt that some locals engaged the insurgents over night and killed many of them. They also reportedly chased members of the Boko Haram group away from the town.
The locals, according to the state governor, Bala James Ngilari, comprise the vigilante group and traditional hunters in the area.
However, Aproko247 also learnt despite the recapture, most people have still not returned to Mubi as they feared Boko Haram might reinforce to retake the town.
The group is still in control of several towns and villages in the north-eastern part of Nigeria.
