Names of some customers with bad loans with Unity Bank Plc have been released, Aproko247 has learnt.
The Bank explained that this step was taken after the affected persons, 111 in numbers, failed to meet up with the grace given to them by the financial institution to pay up.
In a statement issued by the management of Unity Bank, it was disclosed that the alleged debtors “failed to come forward to make good on their obligations.”
Unity Bank further explained that a two-week grace period was given to the affected persons to pay up their loans from “October 8 to October 22, 2014”, but they failed to honour the call.
“This grace period and the warning of the consequences of not responding to the Bank’s call within the period was widely publicised using the mass media,” the Bank said.
“The Immediate fallout of publishing their names includes an industry-blacklisting of such debtors from further banking transactions until they attend to the bad debts. However, several customers heeded the call and have come forward to either make good their obligations or to negotiate a re-structuring of the loans,” the Bank added.
