Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Tele Ikuru, on Sunday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
His action is coming nearly a week to the presidential election in Nigeria.
Ikuru left the ruling party in Rivers State along with his supporters. The decampee is a strong ally of the state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who got into the office as a member of the PDP.
Amaechi has been in a tug of war with the presidency since he dumped the PDP along with Atiku Abubakar and few other governors. He has had to show his might with President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, over the control of Rivers State politics.
Ikuru was a deputy governor under the 2007 short-lived Celestine Omehia’s tenure, which only lasted about six months. Omehia was removed from office by a Supreme Court judgement, which installed as governor of the state.
