Card Readers: Court Gives INEC Go Ahead

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been given the nod to use the controversial card reading machines for the general elections, which kicks off on Saturday, March 28, 2015 (tomorrow).

INEC got the go ahead to use the devices from a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday.

Justice Ademola Adeniyi, in his ruling on Friday afternoon, declined to issue an interim order of injunction stopping the Commission to use the machines for the presidential poll on Saturday.

However, the court ordered both INEC and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, to appear before the court on April 24 to address it on the legality or otherwise of the use of the card readers for a general election.

A Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun State,‎ Walihu Taiwo, challenged the electoral body’s resolve to use the technology for the polls at the court. Taiwo said the use of the card readers was unconstitutional.
