Following rumours on social media over the weekend that two foreigners taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, died of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, the management of the hospital has come out to debunk such, claiming nothing near to that happened at the hospital.
Briefing newsmen on Monday, the Acting Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Prof Chris Bode, said nothing of such occurred at the hospital, describing the purported deaths by EVD as “malicious”.
“Our attention has been drawn to a malicious piece of information making the rounds on social media, which purported that two foreign nationals brought to LUTH on Sunday, April 12, 2015 died of EVD.
“This is to swiftly deny any such rumour and inform members of the public that no such event happened,” Prof Bode told journalists in Lagos.
The CMD stressed that, “Our professionals at the emergency services, various lines of responders, laboratories and nurses all reported no such cases in our hospital.”
He urged members of the public to disregard the rumour, pointing out that since the last case of Ebola was successfully treated in Nigeria, LUTH has been on the alert in ensuring that no other case of EVD is recorded. The professor of medicine encouraged Nigerians to continue to observe good personal hygiene as they did when the disease was first transported into the country in 2014.
Prof Bode said his hospital has particularly observed “eternal vigilance” and will not relent in promptly identifying “any case of the highly infectious disease, in line with international best practices.”
