The production of locally made gin otherwise called ogogoro has been banned by the Ondo State government.
This followed the strange death of no fewer than 18 persons in the state some days ago, after they reportedly consumed a ‘contaminated’ gin.
Addressing newsmen in Akure, the state capital at the weekend, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju, noted that the ministry has begun a sensitisation to let inform residents of the state that the locally made gin was prohibited for now.
He said that until the state government determines how the ‘killer’ gin got contaminated, its production and consumption remains forbidden.
Adeyanju urged residents “to desist from drinking the gin”, saying that “until we are able to get the source of contamination or how the methanol get into the ogogoro, it would remain banned in the entire state, not even only in Irele.”
He explained that, “We don’t know the extent of the contamination. We just need this sacrifice now, so that Ondo State would be free from this deadly disease.”
Some days ago, some villagers of Irele died mysteriously and their deaths were first linked to the anger of a god in the community, but upon medical examination, it was disclosed that the incident was caused by some contaminated locally made gin.
