The All Progressives Congress, APC, has issued a statement declaring that all media organisations, including the Africa Independent Television, AIT, are free to cover activities of the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.
On Monday, it was reported that Buhari had stopped AIT from covering his events for now, pending the time he and the station’s management sort out some issues.
Ahead of the just concluded general elections in Nigeria, AIT aired series of sponsored hate documentaries on the person of Buhari.
But reacting on Tuesday in Abuja to the issue, the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, emphasised that, “the media will not be denied access to cover activities of the president-elect, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign.”
The party urged newsmen to abide by the “Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.”
Mohammed further stressed that, “There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law, for media organizations which have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals.”
“Such repercussions will not include barring any accredited media organization from covering the activities of the President-elect,” the APC declared.
