Some suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked residents of Logo local government area of Benue State on Sunday morning, leaving not less than 27 people dead.
Logo is also the local council the state governor, Gabriel Suswam, hails from.
It was learnt that the monarch of the town was among the persons killed in the early morning attack.
The incident occurred when residents of the area were preparing to go to church. Most of the people slain by the attackers were mainly women and children, who could not run to safety on time.
Several houses in the area were burnt by the hoodlums, who were reportedly heavily armed and shot sporadically.
Meanwhile, spokesman of the police in the state, Austin Ezeani, who confirmed the incident, claimed peace has since returned to the community.
