Ambode Declares Friday Public Holiday

Governor Akinwunmin Ambode of Lagos State has declared Friday, June 12, 2015 as public holiday. This is to commemorate the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election in Nigeria by former Military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, which was won by late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

The governor announced this on Thursday in a statement issued in Alausa, Ikeja, by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna.

Ambode stated that the annulled poll laid the solid foundation of Nigeria’s democracy, which the country is now enjoying. He further said the date marked a watershed in the annals of transparent, free and fair elections in Nigeria.

The governor further said the June 12, 1993 election was when Nigerians voted not thinking of religion, race or ethnic, but a common voice for change. However, Ambode regrets that in 2015, the country is still being divided along the religious, ethnic and racial lines.
