The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC, is planning to look into activities of bloggers and online websites in Nigeria.
However, this is already getting reactions from some Nigerians, including Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, who is the Chairman of Silverbird Groups, owners of Silverbird TV and Rhythm FM.
The lawmaker aired his view on the issue on Wednesday, warning that it could tamper with the freedom of speech backed by the Nigerian constitution.
“The plan by the ICPC to investigate bloggers and online sites raises concerns. Let’s not toy with Freedom of Speech in Nigeria,” the Senator said on his Twitter account.
Although there have been calls in some quarters on the need to regulate blogging in Nigeria, but others have warned that such regulations could lead to something drastic.
In the last 10 days, at least two bloggers have been arrested by the police in Lagos over stories they published on their online platforms.
