The use of commercial vehicles for patrol and other security duties have been banned by the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase.
Arase, in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the Force spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, ordered “police commands and formations” to “immediately stop the use of commercial vehicles/vehicles painted in known states’ commercial colours for police operations and patrol duties.”
It was explained in the statement that this new directive comes following “enormous negative consequences associated with such practices as complained by members of the public.”
“The IGP further warned that abuse of this order by any police unit will attract severe sanctions,” the statement concludes.
There have been cases in the past when hoodlums use commercial buses to operative on the guise of being police officers.
