A raid by some gangsters in a community in Plateau State on Wednesday morning left not less than 17 persons dead. It was said that the gunmen, numbering over 20, stormed Kadunung village in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, destroying houses and shops in the area.
Many residents of the village were said to have been rendered homeless, while some others ran to safety during the unfortunate incident.
However, spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, claimed only one person died in the attack. He further said normalcy has returned to the village, but some villagers have refused to return from where they fled to.
Meanwhile, the state government has called for calm, describing the incident as regrettable.
In a statement issued Governor Simon Lalong’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Emmanuel Nanle, the governor disclosed that, “It is regrettable that as efforts are being made by government to see to the end of violent conflict in Barkin Ladi, Riyom and parts of Jos South Local Government Areas, the state is faced with another communal crisis.”
Lalong directed the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to provide relief materials to all those affected by the attacks.
