The government of Saudi Arabia has directed a thorough investigation into stampede at the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which left more than 700 people dead near Mecca.
Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohamed bin Nayef, who chairs the Saudi Hajj committee, during a meeting on Thursday, ordered a probe into the stampede and its reports submitted to King Salman, who is expected to take appropriate measures to in response.
Spokesman of the Saudi Arabian interior ministry, Major General Mansour al-Turki, disclosed that the incident may have been caused by two waves of pilgrims meeting at an intersection.
He further said high temperatures and fatigue might also have been caused the tragic event, which is the deadliest during Hajj pilgrimage in more than two decades.
