Speaker of the US House of Representatives, John Boehner, has announced his intention to resign from office effective on October 30, 2015.
Boehner has struggled with revolts from the conservative wing of his Republican Party in recent times.
The lawmaker announced his resignation as the Congress Speaker on Friday. He said, “I’m doing this today for the right reasons,” stressing that “the right things will happen as a result.”
This is coming when Pope Francis, who is in the US, appealed to the Congress on Friday to treat immigrants nicely, stating everyone was once an immigrant.
The 65-year-old Ohio lawmaker’s decision has come as shock to members of the 435-seat chamber. It brings to a close a career spanning nearly three decades, and a four-year speakership.
