A court martial has found Brigadier General Enitan Ransome-Kuti guilty of offences committed during a war against Boko Haram insurgents in the north east of Nigeria.
The army officer, who is the son of late human rights activist and former Minister of Health, Beko Ransome Kuti, was sentenced to six months in prison for failing to fight terrorists in Borno State when he was drafted there.
The sentence was pronounced on Thursday by a military court in Abuja and he faces dismissal from the Nigerian Army if the sentence is confirmed by the authorities.
He was said to have failed to perform his military duties during an operation in Baga against Boko Haram members, which is believed to have led to the capture of the town by the insurgents.
Though he denied the allegation, but efforts by his defence counsel, Femi Falana, to exonerate him from the charges did not yield the expected result.
Falana claimed the Army authorities failed to equip the officer with military equipment to fight the terrorists, backing up his defence with statements credited to soldiers and other top army officers that the troops were not well-equipped for the battle.
A former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, shortly after leaving office in 2015, claimed that the army was ill-equipped.
