Former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi was on Thursday confirmed by the red chamber despite a walk staged by members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Senate.
The PDP Senators were led out of the chamber by the Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, who is the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State.
The aggrieved lawmakers said they are against the nomination of Amaechi, insisting that the former governor should not be confirmed as minister because of an alleged corruption case against him. The PDP Senators maintained that his confirmation be shelved pending the determination of the suit in court against him.
But the All Progressive Congress, APC, legislators mounted a fight back warning them of the provision of the senate rule which provides that a matter in court should not be debated on its floor.
However, despite their walk out, the Senate went ahead to confirm the nomination of Amaechi and he is expected to be given portfolio by President Muhammadu Buhari when he swears in his cabinet members in a matter of days.
