Ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has denied an allegation made by the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that President Muhammadu Buhari has turned Nigeria into a single-party state.
The PDP made the allegation at the weekend while reacting to the release of a chieftain of the APC, Jafaru Isa, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over his alleged role in the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal, while the spokesman of the PDP, arrested for the same offence is still in detention.
Olisa Metuh, the mouthpiece of the opposition party, was apprehended at his Abuja residence last Tuesday by the EFCC and he is still incarcerated.
A statement by APC’s National Secretary, Malam Mai Mala Buni, described PDP’s claim as false and misleading. According to Buni, the opposition is working hard to truncate Buhari’s war against corruption as well as blackmail anti-corruption agencies.
The party said it would not cowed by the opposition, but remained focused.
“The APC urges anti-corruption agencies not to be distracted by these syndicated and coordinated attacks and continue to employ all legal and legitimate avenues to bring to book all looters of our common wealth,” Buni said in the statement.
He further said, “It is clear that the PDP is out of sync and out of step with the generality of Nigerians on the clamour to bring to book all looters of public funds. The days of impunity are over.
“The PDP and treasury thieves must pay for the recklessness and shocking mis-management of public funds perpetuated under the defunct 16-year PDP rule. It is however reassuring that in spite of desperate and shameless attempts by the PDP and it’s agents to discredit President Buhari’s anti-corruption efforts, the war against corruption is being won.”
