The former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly kidnapped earlier this week by some gunmen in Abuja has been released.
Victor Olabimtan, who was abducted barely few days after he declared he intention to contest in the governorship election in Ondo State in 2016, was seized on the street of Abuja.
His family was earlier contacted by the kidnappers to pay a ransom of N20 million for his freedom, but we could not confirm if this was paid to secure his release.
Olabimtan spent about 72 hours in the den of his abductors and was let go at about 9pm on Wednesday.
According to a statement by Secretary of his Victor Olabimtan Initiative for Change and Emancipation, VOICE, Gboyega Ajayi, the former lawmaker was taken to a hospital for examination after his release.
“We thank and appreciate the Federal government under the able leadership of President Buhari, the Nigeria Police and other security agencies, Leaders of All Progressive Congress at the national and the Ondo state chapter,” the statement said.
