Members of the 1985 world-conquering Golden Eaglets team will receive N2 million each from the Federal Government for their exploits, President Muhammadu Buhari has promised.
The President also said other athletes that did the country proud at various competitions will get cash rewards as well.
At a reception held in Abuja to honour the team and other victorious Nigerian athletes in recent mundials, President Buhari said the reward given to them was not payment for their services to the country but a token of appreciation.
He also promised that their coaches would be given N1.5 million each.
Thirty-one years ago, when Buhari was a military Head of State, Nigeria emerged winner of the FIFA U-17 tournament in China, but his tenure was caught short by a military coup, which ushered in Ibrahim Babangida as the military President.
In 2015, Nigeria again won the same competition in Chile for a fifth time.
