NHRC Summons Enugu Waste Management MD

Managing Director of the Enugu State Waste Management Authority, ESWAMA, Dominic Okonkwo, has been told to appear before the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, on January 28, 2016, to answer a case of assault against him and his agency.

It was alleged that officials of ESWAMA assaulted and caused bodily harms to the duo of Mohammed Koma and Haruna Koma, who work as private security guards in the state.

A petition was sent in October 2015 to the Office the United Nations System’s Operational Activities for Development in Nigeria, which later referred it to the NHRC at the instance of The Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, CRRAN.

It was alleged in the petition that officials of ESWAMA brutally assaulted the two guards on October 23, 2015, while on a revenue drive at No. 23, Mbaukwu Street, Independence Layout, Enugu State for failing to present evidence of payment of sanitation fees by their employer.

ESWAMA allegedly beat the duo with shovel and heavy iron rods.

Spokesperson of NHRC, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, disclosed that the latest summon is the second the commission is send to Okonkwo.

She reminded Okonkwo and his agency that failure to honour the invitation is punishable under Section 6(4) (4) of the NHRC Act of 1995, as amended, which says such person(s) will be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of six months or to a fine of N100, 000.00, or to both.
