The election of Nyeson Wike as governor of Rivers State has been upheld by a Supreme Court sitting in Abuja.
A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court judges headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed confirmed Wike as governor of the state on Wednesday.
In the lead verdict read by Justice Kekere-Ekun, the court restored the declaration of Wike as the legitimate winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The court further held that three separate appeals filed by Wike, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and INEC, were meritorious.
Concurrent judgments of both the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and that of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal were all set aside by the Supreme Court, while reasons for the ruling today were reserved till February 12.
