Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, on Tuesday urged the Senate to look into the area of giving legal backing to a man marrying more than one wife.
At the moment, a man is not permitted in Nigeria to legally marry two women at the same. Though some men have more than one wife, but a woman first legally married can sue for bigamy.
Contributing to a motion moved by Senator Oluremi Tinubu on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, Ndume prayed that men should be encouraged to marry more than one wife.
He further advised the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to consider taking another wife.
The Senator from Borno said this is to care for women.
Senator Nazif from Bauchi seconded Ndume, but when it was put up for votes, majority of the lawmakers rejected it.
