Lagos Speaker Seeks ID Number For Nigerians

For Nigerians to have confidence in the service provided by the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, the organization must curb activities of touts procuring fake travelling documents for people.

This was the observation of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, when the Passport Control Officer of Alausa Passport Office, Alhaji Mustapha Maikaba visited him in his office at the Assembly complex.

Obasa also urged the service to work towards creating identification numbers for every Nigerians.

The Speaker pointed out that the ‘‘identification number, already in use in developed countries, would be strategic in detecting crimes and even contribute immensely to national development.’’

While decrying the activities of terrorists, the Speaker said, “it is high time certain measures were taken against terrorists to secure lives and property. Your establishment should swing into action to bring to an end the nefarious activities of touts who use your office to procure fake travelling document.’’

He declared that, “we will support your office in ensuring internal security and national development, because all hands must be on deck to take the country to greater height and rid our society of evil machinations ravaging our land.’’

On his part, Maikaba told the Speaker that the e-Passport was designed to curb crimes within and outside Nigeria.

He went further to solicit the support of the Speaker and the House of Assembly to prevail on the traditional rulers and local authorities not to be issuing introductory letters to applicants who are non-Nigerians for the processing of Nigerian international passport.

According to him, NIS has been collaborating with other security agencies to form a united front fighting against terrorism and other vices in the society.
