The Kogi State House of Assembly has been taken over by the National Assembly. This followed the agreement of the Senate on Thursday with the House of Representatives’ resolutions on the report of the delegation to Kogi State on the illegal removal of its Speaker.
The takeover is due to crisis rocking the Kogi Assembly.
At the hearing on the floor, the red chamber agreed with the House of Representatives resolutions on the report.
Though Senator Dino Melaye from Kogi State raised a point of order that the Kogi State matter is before the courts and shouldn’t be discussed at the Senate, but the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, noted that the report isn’t a petition.
He explained that it is purely a simple concurrence with the House of Representatives and ruled Senator Melaye out of order.
After deliberations, all recommendations in the Kogi Assembly report were passed.
Saraki remarked that there’s need for the Senate to return peace to the Kogi House Assembly and bring back its members.
He noted that the takeover of the Kogi Assembly by NASS isn’t indefinite. He assured that the House will resume soonest.
Saraki emphasized on the sacrosanctity of respecting the Constitution at all times.
