The Department of State Service, DSS, Nigeria’s secret police, may have apprehended one of the right men of wanted Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, Khalid Barnawi.
According to tweets from Ahmad Salkida, a journalist used by Boko Haram to convey information to the Nigerian government and the public, Barnawi was captured in Lokoja, the Kogi State cahapital.
Barnawi was captured by men of the DSS on Thursday around 9am “close to a military facility,” Salkida posted on Twitter quoting intelligence sources.
The purported arrest of Barnawi will be one of the biggest so far security forces have done since the onslaught on the terrorists’ group.
The suspect is a top leader of the Ansaru sect, which recently reunited with Boko Haram. The group was established in 2012 after it broke away from Boko Haram, also known as Islamic State in West Africa, ISWAP.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government is yet to confirm this purported arrest.
