Nigeria’s Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, says he is not on the same page with president of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick, on the appointment of a foreign coach for the country’s senior national football team called the Super Eagles.
Dalung, who spoke with journalists in Abuja, said Nigerian coaches should be given ample time to be with teams before calling for their heads.
The Minister said Samson Siasia, who was drafted from the U-23 to handle the Eagles after the former coach, Sunday Oliseh left the job, should be given the necessary backing.
Siasia led the Super Eagles for the 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Egypt first, to a 1-1 draw in Kaduna and 1-0 loss away to lose out on the opportunity to play in the main tournament next year.
The loss prompted Pinnick declare his intention to shop for a foreign coach for the team.
“The hiring and firing of coaches is a problem, when shall we have an end to it? In my view, we place personal interest above national interest.
“You don’t access a coach with one match. You give him ample opportunity and generate correct data to access his performance.
“The hiring and firing of coaches just on one performance speaks volumes of senses of judgement and it does not augur well for our football. It must stop now,” Dalung said.
