Manchester United on Saturday, May 21, 2016, ended their 12-year FA Cup trophy drought by defeating stubborn Crystal Palace at Wembley.
United came from a goal down to beat Palace 2-1 in a game that stretched to extra time after 90 minutes of 1-1 draw.
The Louis van Gaal’s side was reduced to 10 men when Chris Smalling was showed a second yellow in the match for pulling down Yannick Bolasie.
But it took Jesse Lingard’s extra-time strike to win the competition for Manchester United since 2004.
Before the game, there was growing speculation that the game would be van Gaal’s final match as United manager.
They looked to finish the season without trophy after substitute, Jason Puncheon, slotted in a powerful far-post shot 12 minutes to the end of the match, but a resilient United levelled through Juan Mata from close range 8 minutes from time.
United have now won the FA Cup for a record of 12 times just like Arsenal.
