Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Buhari, at a public function held recently, attempted to have a handshake with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, but was ‘stylishly snubbed’ by the first class paramount ruler.
Her action has sparked outrage in some quarters, especially those in the South western Nigeria, which is dominated by the Yorubas.
In Yorubaland, it is disrespectful for someone, especially a woman, to stretch a hand for a handshake with a traditional ruler.
Since the picture of the incident found its way to the internet, some people of the Yoruba extraction have lambasted the President’s wife for her action.
Some have queried why her details failed to pre-inform her of the culture and tradition of the Yorubas, especially when she allegedly knew she was going to meet the Alaafin at the function they were both billed to attend.
Others have also asked if she would have done a similar thing to any respected monarch from northern Nigeria.
Her team is yet to react to the said picture and incident.
